open mike report

I felt like playing my usual set-closer song ("Here's to the Future" by Ken Stringfellow), which I never play at open mikes because I'm never last and it feels wrong to play it in the middle of an evening. So when my name was called at signup time, I picked the last slot of the night. I used to avoid that because it felt very exposed. Then I avoided it because I wanted to get the nervousness over with early in the evening. But I don't feel nervous at the Espresso Garden anymore, so it was fine.
I did learn, though, that if I'm going to play at 10:30, I shouldn't start a continuous stream of iced tea refills before 7. By the time I played, I was pretty wired, which made it hard to stick to a reasonable tempo. Lesson learned.
I also played the new possibly-unfinished song, which still hasn't got a name, and got Greg Newlon to play guitar with me. I like Greg, like his music, and have been wanting for ages to ask him to sit in on something, but never found the right song at the right time. This song needed something to stretch it out, and was very simple and thus easy to get across, and I thought he'd be good on it, and he totally was. That was fun.
Afterwards I had a long, interesting conversation about music with Philip, who was full of good thoughts. Then, later, I was hungry, so now it's time for a snack.
