I guess I missed this last year, but I ran across it in the December 17 NYT Magazine: "Hit Song Science, a program that tries to determine, with mathematical precision, whether a song is going to be a Top 40 hit." And apparently you can try it out if you have a recording and an apparently unspecified amount of money.
