I don't know, part of it is that I've been busy--first with the film festival, then with catching up from it, then from preparing for this Friday's show. But I think another thing that's going on is, my fondness for Slate has become an addiction, and because I'm reading news all week, less of what shows up in the Sunday paper is new to me.

Anyway, here's an article about... no, wait... today's front-page piece on the "general trend towards the completely self-driving car" is mysteriously absent from the Times online! What's going on?

A consolation prize: Why is the Statue of Liberty, enduring symbol of freedom and international amity, still closed in the wake of September 11? Because the National Park Service didn't ask for funding to improve security at the landmark, and the non-profit Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, to quote the subhead, "Had Money but Chose to Rely on Coffee Lids and Private Donations."
