today and tomorrow

Well, I was right, it was great to see Dave again. And to play with Dave again. We spent all afternoon practicing, ate french toast and Japanese noodle soup at a cool diner with a terrible CD collection, and talked a lot about music, the music business, and Los Angeles.

We showed up pretty early at the cafe, as it turned out, and the open mike host was not there yet and I was feeling vaguely nervous because I hadn't heard from her for a while and what if the open mike was cancelled or something? And, uh, well, anyway, someone was there who looked like she might recognize me from somewhere, and what with the anxiety, instead of saying hi, I wandered off, and later she was gone. So I regret wandering off.

We played a good set to a small but pretty appreciative audience. Met some friendly people. Dave played three songs of his own, and it was great to hear them again. On my set he sang and played guitar, bass, drumsticks (actually brushes), and egg (actually egg-shaped shaker). I limited myself to guitar and mandolin, making this one of the very few sets where I've had fewer instruments on stage than my collaborator.

Afterwards I got lost in LA at night and took photographs of tunnels and eventually found my way onto a freeway and drive the hour or so back here.
