Kepler's again, to see Marjane Satrapi. Somewhat as expected, she didn't do a "reading" from her comic book (at least, not while I was there--I showed up late) but instead just talked for a while about her history and Iran's. There was, unsurprisingly, some talk about the wisdom of invading Iran. Sigh. The main point she kept coming back to was the importance of viewing people on all "sides" as individuals with lives and histories, not just numbers or abstract concepts.

Satrapi speaks five languages, including Swedish, which she learned so she could speak with her husband's grandparents, and English, which she learned (from movies, she said) because "I like to speak with people, and English is the only way to speak with everyone." In response to a question I didn't hear, apparently about clothing, she noted that "Iranians are very hype!" which seemed an unusually... urban idiom until someone pointed out that the word is pronounced "hip."

I'm really looking forward to reading the book.

I bought a rhyming dictionary. (See there where it says "On Our Shelves as of 8AM Today"? Not anymore.) I chose this one because it had slang and phrases, both of which are handy to have when you're desperate. The cashier asked me if I was "going to do a little songwriting." "A little," I agreed, not quick enough to explain that I'd already done some songwriting, and the new thing I was going to do was cheat.

(Can I write this off as a business expense?)
