Jan. 27th, 2005 03:00 pmCinequest, the San Jose film festival I've been attending since 1999, is coming up. Barring the unforeseen, this is the last time it'll be easy for me to get there, so of course I'm going to buy a pass and see as much as I can. But check this out: We already have a gig scheduled (not so bad--by Friday I usually need a break anyway), and Kris Delmhorst is playing in Santa Cruz on closing night, and Roger Ebert is coming to Menlo Park on a book tour on opening night.
I could skip the galas, which I don't much enjoy, and the big opening and closing movies are rarely the best in the festival. But I love to be there for opening night, I love the energy and the anticipation and seeing old movie-friends and getting the buzz on what to go to the next day. So I guess I'll miss Roger, and decide what to do about Kris when the program guide comes out. Or maybe drive down to Santa Barbara on Monday? No, I suppose I'll probably have a job to go to. Here's hoping.
Cinequest finally seems to have come up with a sane set of passes. The ones that get you into opening night all get you into closing night, and vice versa. You can get into the Maverick events (i.e., conversations with famous people) at a reasonable price (barring late-announced separate-admission events, like Schwarzenegger last year, but as long as they're Republican movie stars, who cares). And there's a new pair of $125 passes that get you into all of the movies and some of the practical forums. There's almost no difference between the Movie Lover and Movie Maker passes, but if you're wearing the Movie Maker pass I bet it'll help with the networking.
By the way, check out Minnesota Public Radio's new music station, The Current. (Webcast available.) My sister assures me it's totally awesome, and I don't doubt it.
