In an old NYT Magazine article on child abuse, alien abduction, and recovered memories, I read a passing reference to "sleep paralysis - a scary but fairly common experience in which the part of the brain that inhibits motor messages during REM sleep fails to disengage as the sleeper wakes up. The sensation is of being pinned to the bed, often accompanied by hallucinations of some spectral entity at the bedside." I've had that! And it is scary (even ghostless)! It's nice to have a name to put on it, though.

witch rides, old hag, etc...

Yeah-- I suffered from that all throughout late childhood/ teen years... it seems to have abated now. But for years I had no idea what to call it, and always thought that it was just me. It was so terrifying. When I finally read some articles about it, I felt better... but still. It's so freaky to be unable to move, yet wide awake.

Succubus? But I hardly ...

I get that periodically, mostly due to my habit of sleeping with the lights on or falling asleep shortly before dawn. Mostly I'm so out of it I just notice that I always seem to come back to the same scene in a dream, which turns out to be whatever the view is like in whatever position I'm in in bed.

The greys just called and say "no". In your case, it appears, it was kidnapping by alliens and being used for science experiments. They say they'll try a different setting next time, and they're sorry.

Hey, yeah, I hate that. I used to get that every freaking time I fell asleep on the couch. (Right, don't do that, then.)

Me too

I get sleep paralysis too sometimes. Found out the name when we (Randy and I) were discovering that I seemed to have every known sleep disorder (so far, nightmares, night terrors, restless leg syndrome, sleep paralysis, and I might be forgetting one--plus the occasional insomnia).
