DeatHat is playing three shows this week, one of them as far as we've ever had to drive for a show, and all on my first week on a new job. I'm looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday.

For some shows we dress up, but even when we don't, Kate almost always has a costume. She uses makeup--whitens the face, reddens the lips, but the most striking element is a dark stripe across her face, at eye level, sort of like a domino mask. Oh, like this:

So two of our shows this week were with The Lisps, who are awesome. Totally fun and sometimes theatrical, but also smart and musical, which fun bands sometimes aren't. Tuesday night we played with them in San Francisco (along with The Humans, who had great songs, but it was sometimes hard to hear the songs because the band was so loud). It was a weird triple bill, ranging from our art-folk to the Lisps' vaudeville-country to the Humans' sci-fi rock, but somehow it all cohered pretty well.

Last night we went to Sacramento, and I guess Cesar from the Lisps thought Kate's mask was cool, because before their set, he put on an identical stripe of black makeup. (His face gets wetter than Kate's when he plays--by the end of the night his whole face was just... swarthier.) And halfway through their set, Natalie from Agent Ribbons (sort of dark cabaret songs, but played with punk rock guitar-and-drums vigor) emerged from the bathroom with a stripe of her own. It was a clean sweep for the black mask movement.

This is the kind of post that would be way better with a picture at the end to show what I'm talking about, but I don't have one [see here], so here's a picture of me instead, for no reason:

Tomorrow night we open for Jason Webley, one of Kate's favorite performers (I like him too) at the Cayuga Vault in Santa Cruz. We're totally looking forward to it. Also, the Lisps are heading through LA, San Diego, Denver, and across the midwest on their way home to Brooklyn. Highly recommended.
