Sanders's defining characteristic has always been that of a reliable friend to property developers. He's an old skool Republican---"the kind Main Street business owners like". As such, opposition to same-sex marriage was never something he really believed in, but probably felt a lot of pressure to fake from insane activists. See also the recent Cheney appearance on The Daily Show. In the current climate, he probably felt he could finally shoot the bird to the 23% crowd with less than zero cost.
