Stuff from Jan Herman's MSNBC blog:

The Democratic presidential candidates' favorite books.

Andy Rooney:
I'm patriotic but I wish our government would stop treating this war as if they had to sell it to us with slick advertising slogans.

Eric Olsen:
Pity the poor Dixie Chicks: it says reams about the diverse sociology of country and alt-rock music fans that the Chicks have been vilified, burned in effigy, boycotted, denigrated, debated ad nauseum for one member making an anti-Bush statement from the stage in London, whereas Eddie Vedder impales a mask of Bush on a mike stand and it gets barely a ripple: "oh that's just Eddie, you know how these rock stars are..."

(Olsen and a number of respondents suggest that the reaction to Natalie Maines's comment was heightened by the fact that it seemed so out of context. Well, it sure has been reported out of context. "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States." What a weird thing to bring up out of the blue, perhaps right in the middle of a chorus of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide"! But that's probably not when she said it. I haven't seen a single news source indicate whether she was talking about anything before or after that one sentence.)
