This was a great show. A bunch of friends showed up, and, gratifyingly, a whole bunch of people we didn't know came into the cafe and stuck around to listen. Someone from the cafe said it was the biggest crowd she'd seen since they started having live music again.
Our opening act cancelled due to illness, so we ended up opening for ourselves--I played a short solo set, Dave played a short solo set, and then Dave and Joan and I played the set we'd come for. People actually responded well to the solo sets, but it wasn't until we got together that the show really kicked in.
Here's the story about the encore. We'd worked on a Talking Heads cover ("This Must Be The Place"), but it felt a little shaky when we drew up the set list, so we made it "optional", in case we had time to fill, or, we said jokingly, "if our fans demand it". And when we got to the end of our set, we still had some time, and people seemed to be digging the music, so we decided to go ahead and play it.
And then people started yelling for an encore, which I'd never expected. We'd run out of songs! It didn't occur to me until later that we probably could've repeated a song from earlier in the set.
Anyway, it was great fun. It's nice to feel wanted, and it was also just great playing with Dave and Joan. I hope we'll do it again.
