uneventful

The trip from Minnesota to California is about three and a half iterations of Ida's Will You Find Me long, plus that time around the edges when you're not allowed to use portable electronic devices. Will You Find Me is perhaps not the best prescription for the nervous flyer; it has several eerie sections, and loud humming noises that sound somewhat but not quite like the engine does. Other parts are quite soothing.

It occurred to me at several points (i.e., each time the album ended) that there might be better options in the bag of 30-some CDs at my feet, but there was really nothing I could do, because the strain of pulling it out and rummaging through it would set me further back in my quest to fall asleep. And also because, I felt quite certain, any motion on my part might cause the plane to capsize.

I am by nature a fidgeter. I am almost constantly tapping feet or fingers or teeth, or scratching an itch or folding a napkin or shifting my weight. I am also a compulsive reader, impelled by even a short period of inactivity to dive into a book, magazine, airplane safety card, whatever's available. For someone like me, it is very, very strange to spend four hours with eyes closed, mostly conscious but scarcely moving. Today that is something I did.

I did manage to doze off for a while--for several whiles--during the third iteration. I also dreamed a music video of the midwest for one of Karla Schickele's songs, but I don't remember which one.
