One of the most uncomfortable and disorienting sensations I've experienced while flying is that moment when I either stand up or lean forward and suddenly feel very much as if I'm HURTLING THROUGH SPACE AT HUNDREDS OF MILES PER HOUR.
Because the last thing I need, at that moment, is to be reminded that I AM.
The two best things that happened to me in 2002 were the sighting of a man in an enormous green velvet sombrero walking down a suburban street, and the sudden, inexplicable, and relatively complete disappearance of my fear of flying.
Commiseration.
