stop breathing

I sure like The Others. Watching it for a third time (once in the theater, twice on DVD this week), I'm still noticing new details and resonances. But the main thing is Nicole Kidman's performance. The dark rooms and creaking doors and spooky music (by the director!) are all satisfyingly creepy, but really the whole movie is written on Kidman's face, the varying mixture of madness and fear as she tries to keep everything under control. Maybe I'll watch Moulin Rouge! next.

I like it too. I've spent some time defending its honor before people who didn't like it for some unfathomable reason -- including Nicole Kidman's "poor" performance. But I think it kicks spooky ass.

Wow. I read a bunch of reviews this afternoon, and not everyone liked it--Roger Ebert, whose opinion I generally value, thought it was too slow and not that suspenseful, and I can see how it would strike someone that way. But even the people who didn't like the movie thought Kidman's performance was exceptional. Exceptionally good, I mean.

I never thought much of her until Moulin Rouge! and The Others came out in the same year, and, well, wow.

Based on this post, Erik, I went out and bought it. Found it used (2 DVD set) for $9! I love Half Price Books -- I also got this ENORMOUS Windsor McKay collection and a bunch of other stuff, but perhaps I should save that for my own blog.

Yikes. I hope you enjoy it. At least you got a great price. I've only read a little Windsor McKay.
