A few items from my trip so far:

There are, as previously mentioned, thousands of donut shops on the north side of LA. My favorite so far: "Doughn-t Hut" ("What's missing? U!").

Before the Kulak's open mike, I ate at Original Thai, "the best Thai food in town!" It was pretty good, but did not inspire me to sample Burbank's lesser Thai offerings.

Russell and I went record shopping yesterday at Aron's and Amoeba. (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] europopkid!) I now have more CDs.

Hem and Leona Naess were great again. Leona had a bigger band, which suits her. (I usually prefer small groups for singer-songwriters.) I've been enjoying the sampler from her forthcoming CD, and the other new songs in concert, too.

It was the first time I've seen Hem with a drummer. That was good sometimes--it added energy, or added some desired precision to the rhythm. But other times the drummer seemed to overwhelm the delicacy of the compositions. You know who's great, though? Their upright bassist.

I talked to Dan Messé after Sunday's show but didn't manage to ask him if he'd received the cover of "Sailor" I'd sent him. ("Sailor" on the record is lush, with Sally Ellyson's gorgeous voice, a small orchestra and I think a French horn solo; my version is spare, with my rather less lullaby-suited voice accompanied only by acoustic guitar.) Last night I finally confirmed that he'd got it, and he said nice things about it. Note to [livejournal.com profile] xythian and his fans: Dan specifically mentioned liking the cover of the cover.

Tonight San Diego, tomorrow Santa Barbara, the next night a gig in San Jose. (So... many... saints!) It's already clear to me that I need to come back soon and spend a whole visit in LA, instead of jumping around southern California. I probably can't until October, though.

Oh man, I love Burbank. It's like a swank 50s talk show set gone to pot, every corner another seedy martini bar, tv execs scurrying around from donut shop to donut shop, the original Bob's Big Boy.

I could live there for a summer, but not for a lifetime. Our love is a fleeting love. Better a one-night-stand than a long term relationship.

and the next time you're in burbank, lorien and i will take you to a place called chandra. that's our place for thai food and it's really, really good.

you've been fortunate the past couple of days. the air quality and weather hasn't been too bad at all. the past couple of days you could see the downtown skyline at sunset! so pretty!

Let's see, I was in LA during the day on... Tuesday, but I guess I didn't notice the skyline. I think driving through the city on Thursday was the first time I really noticed smog. It wasn't so great.

Really, really good Thai food sounds like a good idea. During this week's whirlwind tour of southern California I realized I need to come back and spend a week in San Diego... and come back and spend a week or two in LA... instead of jumping around every day. Probably can't manage it before the big trip, but maybe in October. Assuming I've cheered up by then.
