I rarely do 'memes', and even more rarely post about them, but for once there's something I'm good at, so here are some movies I've seen.

What follows is the IMDB top 100 (as of, I guess, whenever somebody cut-and-pasted the list I got from [livejournal.com profile] sethm). Bold means I've seen it, italic means I'm not sure.

I guess I should rent the remaining movies sometime, but they sure are a serious bunch. If I had the strength to compile a top 100 list, it'd include more comedies, many of them from the 1940s and starring Cary Grant. (Also, how is Notorious only #97? Kids today.)

great list to work from. mr. smith goes to washington, full metal jacket, shawshank redemption, jaws, american history x - all great films i -highly- recommend. i can't even count the number of times i've seen shawshank and jaws. and, this may not do it for you, but ed norton's body in american history x is, by far, the only body i have ever seriously lusted over (over, for, about, after?). anyway, speaking of movies, i -finally- watched kissing jessica stein the other night. time to send it back and get the next movie on my netflix queue.

Requiem's the worst movie on the list? Please do elaborate on that one...

To me, it just looked like stupid, selfish people doing stupid, selfish things. It's not that I don't have sympathy with people who do stupid things. But these characters didn't work for me.

I did like the little mini-montages that represented the act of drug use--injection, swallowing, etc. In general I thought it had a lot of technique (too much, maybe) but the story was tiresome. It aspired to tragedy, but lacked the weight, and instead was just an exercise in "how much worse can I make things for these characters".

Aronofsky's first film, Pi, had inventive visuals and great sound, and, in my opinion, terrible dialogue writing. It felt like a demonstration of the director's promise, and I was looking forward to what he could do with a good script. Requiem for a Dream was a great demonstration of what he could do with a bigger budget, but I'm still waiting for him to tell a good story.

Just my opinion, of course.

11:35, press return

And Pi had Go! Maybe it's genius!

Requiem did have the Scariest Fridge Ever.

Yea I understand the frustration- if you havent already, you should check out the book, I think you'll like it better. There are a few short essays in the beginning which are really interesting. I think the book does a better job relating the destruction/corruption of the american dream while intertwining the four characters and their addictions better than the movie in my opinion.

Cool. I have Selby's Last Exit to Brooklyn but have only made a couple of faint attempts at reading it--have you read that one? How does it compare?

I'm shocked! We're going to send you for re-education, and let's rent Twelve Angry Men sometime. Meanwhile, I've posted my list in my blog, and you can be shocked too.
