I got stuck in freeway traffic on the way to work. Crawling along at like 2.5 mph, I thought, man, the only thing worse than working is driving to work. Then I got to the source of the slowdown: Dazed pedestrians around a smashed car and an SUV on the right, and more impressively, on the left, a pickup truck that appeared to have bounded over the center divider--or at least most of the way over. It was perched on the concrete median, one rear wheel still hovering over northbound 880 while the rest of the truck was now officially southbound.

In conclusion, there are at least two things worse than working.

i'm perhaps the only person in the history of the world (certainly the only person in california) that wouldn't mind a longer commute. my reasoning is that i don't get to listen to enough music in the car. i take side-streets to work now and it takes me about 20 minutes one-way, which means that every day i can listen to one album (so as long as it's about 40 minutes long).

but gas is expensive and i'm ridiculous, so diregard this entire comment.

You could always walk -- that'd take a while.

But I thought your unhealthy passion for compact discs was your whole objection to the iPod.

Lately I'm using drive time to work through my old (high school, college) collection of cassettes. That's been interesting. And, of course, to sing along with CDs when I'm warming up on the way to a show.

Sometimes I sure do wish I had a CD player in my car. The Jukebox is better for long trips, but the CDs are easier for quick selection at a stoplight (IMHO.)

a cd player in a car

I would LOVE to be walking distance from work! I currently DEPLORE my wasted commute time. (Even if it means time to connect with K twice a day, cross the psychological bridge between home and work, etc, etc...I don't need more than 5 minutes to do all that! Certainly not 30 each way!) In fact...there is a job opportunity for me out in Milwaukee that I'm "almost" considering! (North Clackamas school district- I've been meaning to tell you about this!) There are many factors to consider (particularly, $ and position stability are relatively unknown...also the school wouldn't accommodate K's needs, although I'm pretty sure that one nearby would), but there are some very attractive factors (small magnet bilingual school just starting out, good professional leadership opportunity in many ways, i know the director, etc), but more to the point of this post...I DON'T KNOW if I even want to face that commute! (Into Portland WITH, as opposed to AGAINST traffic, each and every morning and afternoon!?)
Hearing you say "why not walk" put this issue in perspective for me: I'm sure I want to live CLOSER to, nor farther from, my work!

Under 3 miles for me. I walked home today, left the car there. I'll walk in tomorrow. It rocks.

Right:

1) Being stuck in traffic on the way to work
2) Being so frustrated with (1) that you jump the divider to try to go home again
