Advice for job hoppers.

Teenagers like their parents. Screenwriters like cafes.

I almost didn't read them, but a trio of travel pieces on India were my favorite part of today's paper. R. W. Apple finds wildlife and color in Kerala. Nancy R. Newhouse visits the dentist in Rajasthan. And Amy Waldman explores the contradictory narratives of the Taj Mahal.

Yeah, I've been worried about the job hopping. My longest tenure at any job was two years -- but out of my last four employers, three left me (layoffs, moves, office closings) rather than me leaving them, so hopefully I have a good story to tell during interviews.

I'm looking forward to working at Stanford, though it'll mean I'll have another one-year-job to add to the story after it's over!

To me, two years at one job seems like about as much as can be tolerated--I can't quite believe I spent almost three years at PlaceWare, much as I liked working there. So when I read articles about how dangerous it is to spend "only" two or three years at each job, I can only feel doomed.

"Teenagers like their parents" made me think of Strauss & Howe's generational theories, and sure enough Strauss is quoted in the article. It's sort of eerie how accurate their predictions have been so far.
Still anxious about the coming Fourth Turning, now that it's clear that 9/11/01 wasn't it.

Fourth Turning? I thought you were the one who despised all religion.

It's a theory, not a religion. You know, like evolution.

thanks for the link to the job hopping article. i'm going to keep that handy. i keep telling my friends who hate their jobs that they need to suck it up and just deal. put in some tenure and pad the resume so that in a few years when they've got some life and work experience they can start applying for things that might be of more interest to them and do so from a more mature standpoint.

no one wants to put in their due these days. everyone wants things NOW. that's not how life works.

That's so weird, because you don't look eighty. Good skin care, I guess.

But seriously, most of my friends who hate their jobs have plenty of life and work experience--they just have TERRIBLE JOBS. But I guess maybe yours are different.

i knew those asian genes on my mother's side would come in handy someday!

yeah, my friends are all 20-24 and working their first or second office jobs (this is their post-retail high school phase). i say as long as you're making enough to cover rent and expenses and have enough left over for a good time every now and then, well, isn't that the dream right there?
