That's actually why I find a lot of the secondary characters more interesting, and why in most of the fanfiction I read, Harry is a tangential character. It's the world I enjoy rather than the personage of Harry Potter...
That's one reason I was annoyed at the first two movies -- they downplayed the assistance Harry gets and it becomes much more about him.
I'm also amsused by the link right below this story (in Lynx) about "John Kerry's running mate" -- I thought for a moment it was a continuation into another story explaining why Kerry would pick Harry as his running mate.
I've always seen Harry as a rather ordinary boy just beginning to find out that he has the potential to be extraordinary. His personality is so mild compared to Hermione and Ron, and yet he is so greatly loved and there is so much hope surrounding him.
I suppose he could be seen as a pampered jock, patsy and a fraud (as the author of that article sees him), but I'm also not sure how to react to a person who writes about how everyone else makes such a big deal out of Harry Potter. Isn't he making a big deal about Harry Potter by writing about him? Seems like he is also trying to get his "foot in."
I don't read much into Harry Potter. Some people I know really love the series, whereas I lost interest after reading the first few books. But then, I lose interest in most things after a while. And also, I never got what the big deal is about Star Wars, either. But I did like the third HP movie.
I just thought it was funny (and I needed something light after the previous article).
Myself, I have no particular feelings about Harry Potter. I read the first book and saw the first movie, thought each of them both likable and forgettable, and have bothered with only movie-review-sized doses since then.
