Okay, look: It's sad when anybody dies. And Alzheimer's disease is a terrible, terrible way to go. It's a tragedy for his loved ones. But let's not forget: His administration trained the Taliban, sold chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein, illegally sold arms to the terrorist state of Iran, and fought democracy all over Central America. A lot of those chickens that have come to roost today were hatched on Reagan's farm.

So I'm sad for his family and those who knew him well--I have been for some time. But suffering doesn't make you a saint. Count me out of the love fest.

Hear, hear!

It seems he wasn't the only one with a poor memory.

On another topic, I was thinking of your post yesterday while watching Saddest Music, mostly about the observation that Mark McKinney can't keep a straight face. It's true that his acting is paper-thin in the movie, but I never managed to decide whether that was deliberate, a combination of the intentionally stagy style of the movie and his own character's emotionlessness. And I actually thought he was quite good in the last scene.

I agreed with a lot of your other comments, but still liked it more than you did, I think. Mainly it was just so nice to see something different. Also I like "The Song Is You".

I haven't posted an addendum to that review, but I really only talked about the negatives. The film wasn't bad at all, just a couple of big things out front that got in the way for me. There were a lot of things I enjoyed, and the way he played with music was definitely one of them.

I'm no fan of the Gipper either, but I will say one thing in his defense. When the budget really started to hit the fan, Reagan raised taxes (three times!) and started to rein in spending -- both in stark contrast to the current guy.

I expressed a similar sentiment today and you would have thought I'd just announce i like to beat up toddlers. I said "Well, he was pretty old, and had been ill a long time, and we knew it was coming" those in my party were like, "How insensitive! he's the first president to die since LBJ." And I still don't know why that matters.

I thought Nixon died, too.

But yeah, I've always been confused by the hero-worship of Reagan.
