Jun. 20th, 2004 09:26 amLast night I went to Playing in Fog's second annual Nick Drake tribute show at Cafe du Nord. It was pretty cool except for the part where I live in the suburbs and have to drive a while to get there and then look for parking and then after the show I have to drive some more.
I missed Loquat, but I saw five or six other local bands play a couple of Nick Drake songs and one of their own. Some of them were good and some of them were just okay, but my favorite was a combined set by Odessa Chen and Thee More Shallows. (They backed her up, she sang backup for them.) Doing covers, a lot of time either your band's personality overwhelms that of the original artist, or vice versa. I thought this set most successfully fused the spirit of Nick Drake with something new.
I really like TMS's song "The Perfect Map," which you can download from their web site.
The headliner was Damien Jurado, and I liked his set too. Also, if he sounds like that when he's not doing a Nick Drake tribute, then maybe I should be name-dropping him in my corny press bio.
