This is why I'm in a good mood tonight: External validation.

Since I gathered a bunch of old, remixed, and new recordings into the 7-song CD I keep meaning to sell online, I've had a couple of episodes where I go and see a musician or band who's been a real inspiration to me, and afterwards I say some things to them that are both nice and heartfelt, and I also give them a CD. I've mentioned Ida and Nadine; there have been more, although I think now I'm just about done.

Why do I give CDs to musicians I love? Well, look, my urge to make music is really in large part an homage to the people whose music I've been obsessed with. So in a way, I can tell myself, it's a gift to them, in thanks for all the music they've brought into my life. But being honest, it's also because I want someone I respect a lot to like what they've inspired me to do. You know?

I don't necessarily expect them to listen to the CD; or to like it; or to remember it; or to tell me they remembered or liked or listened to it; and I dread the day when one of these very nice musicians feels like they have to say something positive about the CD I gave them, just to be polite. But I'm always hoping that there'll be at least something about the CD that they'll really dig. Because, wouldn't that be great?

So here's why I'm in a good mood tonight: A few months ago, I gave a copy of TK to Peter Mulvey--one of a handful of musicians through whom I can trace my origins as a folk music fan--and his cohort David Goodrich--a sort of hero for everything I do these days to accompany other musicians. Tonight they were back in town, and both of them said much nicer things about my CD than simple courtesy required. And that felt great.

Plus, then they played a wonderful show, full of old favorites and stuff from the new CD I waited until tonight to buy, and now I'm sitting here listening to it at home. So of course I'm in a good mood.

Well, the SF Opera production of Faust was good, but more expensive. also longer. And fewer mandolin riffs.

Why do things happen at once? I thought the whole idea of time was to prevent that.
