Played a just-okay set tonight to a room full of people... and then walked across the sidewalk to another open mike, where I played, I think, a very good set for the eight people who stayed until the end. Such is life.
The Orange County Museum of Art has some great pieces in its permanent collection, but the one that got my attention this time was a visiting Mondrian. In art textbooks we learn to think of Mondrian's paintings as perfect geometries of pure bold color, but decades down the line what they are is greying slightly and latticed with tiny cracks. Because that's what time does to perfection.
