It's been a while since a musical performace left me awestruck, but Frigg, a fiddle-dominated septet from Finland and Norway, did that tonight.

Dang! They were here for the Lotus Festival, but only on Thursday when I wasn't able to go. (They probably had to leave to get up there, wherever you are at the moment.)

Yeah. It was a double bill with Väsen, and both bands mentioned their drive from Bloomington.

I went through a serious episode of Scandinavian folk music acquisition a few years ago, abetted mostly by North Side, the US label that distributes both those bands. I had a ticket to see Väsen in 2001, but they cancelled their fall tour for understandable reasons, and last year I was in Minneapolis almost but not quite in time for the Nordic Roots festival (also a byproduct of North Side, I think).

Uh so anyway, I'm really glad I managed to catch at least one show while I was in town again. And I'm glad it was this show, because, really, amazing. Although I would love to have seen Swåp, too.
