open mike report

Mission City Coffee Roasting Company, 2003-01-29

Dusted off my cover of the Blue Nile's "From a Late Night Train". I've done this in the past as a jazz-tinged piano number, but there's never a piano around where you need one, so now it's sort of a minimalist bossa on the guitar. Hooray. Also did two other covers, and got to accompany Kristina and Russell.

While he tore down his equipment after the show, Dave put on Steve Reich's "Music for Eighteen Musicians", one of the best recordings ever--on a nice sound system, in a great room. Devastating. Devastating and impossible to exit gracefully--you have to play it to the end. Dave faded it out after about ten minutes. Both of us cringed.

Coincidentally, I've been playing "Music for Eighteen Musicians" over and over in my office for two days. I can't say a Thinkpad does it justice, but I've had several people come in and lose track of what for and just stand there listening.

Wow, that's the best productivity aid ever.
