How come Minnesota is contested? Isn't that state a bastion of liberal right-thinking? Or is it also full of gun-toting peace-enforcers who want to keep out the Canadian terrorists?

How can this be such a deadheat, there's no rationality in the world anymore. I know you're thinking more positively, but I can't retain my hope for more than 2 minutes.

The polls are all moving in the right direction, and voter registration is way up, which generally favors the Democrats. I think it's going to be okay. Not that the time for vigilance is past. Actually, being politically active is part of what's helped me stay optimistic.

As it happens I was just reading the Slate piece on Minnesota's slide to the right (http://slate.msn.com/id/2108277). Essentially, the old Democratic-Farmer-Labor coalition has become less relevant, and a lot of Republicans have moved into the outer suburbs. At this point it's pretty much the Twin Cities and the Iron Range carrying the Democratic banner.

I've started to think about, well, if Kerry wins... what happens next? The Republicans still have all of Congress, they have governors in liberal strongholds like California and Minnesota, there's an astonishing number of people who still think George W. Bush is a good president, and, even though I've come to like Kerry a lot, he's far more of a centrist than I'd like. All of which doesn't depress me--it just means there's a lot more work to do.
