The problem with the purple map for me is that it shows how close the races were even in the so-called "blue state." It's not a purple map, in fact, it's more of a magenta one, and that's scary.

Also, the "blending" idea worries me in that it implies finding some kind of "middle ground" which can appeal to both sides. If anything, this has finally given me the resolve that we should fight for liberal ideals without compromise -- it's kinda hard to find a middle ground on issues of a woman's right to choose, gay marriage, etc. And pretty hard to rationalize a compromise on these issues.

Mostly what it says to me is that there's a population to engage with--as opposed to the harsh blue and red that lead people to plan secession. But I see your point.
