You may have heard that NBC is planning a miniseries based on the 9/11 Commission Report. Hm. But I'm glad to hear Graham Yost is writing it; the creator of "Boomtown" is better suited to the job than anyone else I can think of.

Desperate Housewives viewed in the line of John Cheever. Also, Frank Rich on the phony controversy. Mostly I'm linking to these so I can mention it's one of the two new shows I'm enjoying this season. It's so good to see Teri Hatcher in a comedy again. Although I think they should lose the voiceover and spend the money on better music.

Dwight Garner on Country Music Television: "I've become hooked on CMT for the same reason that people glue themselves to soap operas or pro wrestling: this canny channel gives you a whole universe of good guys and bad guys and cute chicks and sassy mamas to root for and against."

Film directors Wes Anderson and Mike Nichols. The latter isn't rapturous: Nichols is "a wonderfully self-confident technician", "has never pretended he was a genius", but is "more than just another feel-good hack".

Freeman's, a hot new restaurant in Manhattan founded by a guy who missed the Loring Bar. (Note to Damien Cave: Not inviting the First Family to your parties isn't "elitist".)

A cool analysis of a Benjamin Edwards painting of an imaginary city. Unfortunately neither the tiny JPEG on the web nor the blurry print edition makes it easy to appreciate, and I won't make it to the Greenberg Van Doren Gallery by year's end. There are more hard-to-see pictures on his web site.
