From sometime: NPR's All Songs Considered asks musicians to name the Perfect Song. Ben Gibbard picks "There She Goes," Travis Morrison "Once in a Lifetime," Dan Messé "Wichita Lineman," and Stephin Merritt says it's that song by the Archies, "obviously." And more!

The "listen to the entire show" link doesn't seem to play a show--it just plays the songs--but it's still good reading, and anyway, they're good songs.

There's one guy who picked Kate Bush's "Babooshka." I love that list! :)

And his explanation made me laugh out loud.

My favorite part was:

"I belong to an order similar to the Rosicrucians that regards the true identity of the Perfect Song a piece of knowledge as important as the lineage of Christ."

Wichita Lineman is a pretty awesome song.

Harrumph. The only one of those I might even consider agreeing with is "Night and Day" (one of the staff picks) but of course I'm only extrapolating from the U2 cover version. (And I guess ditto for "Every Little Thing" and Yes.) It's weird that I was just listening to that Kinks album two days ago and I totally don't even remember the song mentioned (while there are at least 3 or 4 I could hum parts of from memory).

Anyway, the actual perfect song is in fact "Louie Louie". Duh.
