Hem's second album is mentioned in the context of a countrypolitan revival, and Jon Pareles's Playlist has some intriguing stuff. But the best piece in yesterday's Arts section is on the minimalist fluorescent art of Dan Flavin, and how his legacy, or maybe the idea of legacy, is undermining his stated (but not always pursued) intent.

Minimalism

I read a great news report about .. umm .. someone's piece of art: Four White Squares or something similar. Four square stretched canvases painted white. Very crisp and kind of nice, in that minimalist way.

The museum that owns them has to touch them up every now and then. They use a roller and a can of Dutch Boy, and just reroll the entire set. It's what the artist specified. I love it.

I know how much you love the Hem and I picked up both (?) of their records and I put on their first one as I was going to sleep recently and it was so soothing. I haven't listened to it since, but I will. And they're playing LA with David Mead and I want to go.

Mmm, that'll be a good show. I checked their tour dates yesterday, I hope their SF show is with Mead. (And yes, "both", except there's also an EP of covers that I think only got fully released in the UK.)
