From Philip Greenspun's cross-country travelogue:
Shopping at Circuit City in Massachusetts is painful because anybody who actually knows anything about circuits can find a better job at a tech company. In a small city, however, Circuit City might be the best employer for 100 miles and the guy who installs car stereos can be a real craftsman.

Something I'd never thought about before. On the other hand, he prefers Kmart to Target.

Paul O'Reilly's First Thing in the Morning is really good, in that Nick Drake vein. I can't find any audio samples for you, but if you have some disposable income and/or trust me too much, just go buy it from Miles of Music.

Similarly, for a while (this is 6-7 years ago) the phone company here only had one tech who knew how to install ISDN, because whenever they'd send a clueful tech to do work at MSFT, they'd end up hiring him.

That rules. The lesson here is obviously: Never send people to Microsoft.

Hmmmm.
