I'm having a going-away party for myself, in the form of a show on October 15. There'll be short sets by me solo and with bands, plus some sets I'm not in, so I'll have time to hang out. I'm trying to crowd a lot into one evening, so if you're coming and there's a song you want to hear, let me know. More details later.

I need a few more worthy charity organizations, on the general theme of Hurricane Katrina relief and reconstruction. So far I have the American Red Cross, Mercy Corps, Modest Needs, ACORN, AFM-NO Local 174-496, WWOZ, and possibly the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. Via Chris I see that Naomi Klein recommends the Vanguard Public Foundation, but their web site doesn't say anything about a hurricane, and in any case seems pretty California-focused. Any other suggestions?

Interesting. Yeah, TrueMajority is an organization I know, and they're effectively vouching for the People's Hurricane Fund. Still, after following all those links I'm starting to feel a little like the people at Discover the Network (http://www.discoverthenetwork.org/default.asp).

I looked into them, but for various reasons I'm focusing on secular groups. Also the international organization gets an atrocious rating (http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/3789.htm) from Charity Navigator, although various chapters (http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.results&keyword_list=habitat+for+humanity&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&Submit=Submit) do better.

I was going to suggest American Friends Service Committee, which isn't secular. Nor is it associated with the Wim Wenders movie. They don't seem to be listed in charity navigator for some reason.

By the way, I was surprised last year to find that Habitat was "faith based". Those sneaky faithful do-gooders.

And maybe just to shake people up a bit, you could throw in a tsunami relief organization. Remind people that rebuilding and relief take a long time.
