Friday Random Ten:
  • Pet Shop Boys, "My October Symphony"
  • Josh Rouse, "Christmas with Jesus"
  • The Mountain Goats, "Song for Dennis Brown"
  • Kris Delmhorst, "Waiting Under the Waves"
  • Philip Rodriguez, "Don't for a minute think it's easy"
  • Everything but the Girl, "Rollercoaster"
  • Kenny Loggins, "I'll Be There"
  • Ida, "Little Things"
  • Shelby Lynne, "Thought It Would Be Easier"
  • The Horseflies, "Who Throwed Lye On My Dog"
The mid-80s Loggins song costs me a lot of coolness points, doesn't it? The Mountain Goats might help if I didn't admit I've never actually heard the song. "Rollercoaster" is from an album recommended long ago in a letter from my old friend Kristie.

I'm getting more aggressive about discarding CDs. Here are some more.

Soulwax, Much Against Everyone's Advice. Belgian rock.
The Sea and Cake, Oui. Chicago rock. Mellow.
Steely Dan, Everything Must Go. Tried to like it.
Boz Scaggs, Dig. From 2001, sort of a return to his Silk Degrees form.
Elton John, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Disc 2 only.
Jay Farrar, ThirdShirtGrottoSlack. Sebastopol-esque EP.
Bill Frisell, Gone Just Like a Train. With Viktor Krauss and Jim Keltner.
Madonna, Ray of Light. Good singing, William Orbit production.
Leo Kottke, My Father's Face. He can sure play guitar.
Bill Frisell, The Sweetest Punch. Arrangements of songs from Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach's Painted from Memory. How could so many musicians I love (also Brian Blade, Don Byron, Cassandra Wilson, ...) make a CD I find so dull? But maybe you'll like it.
The Foundations, The Very Best Of.... "Build Me Up Buttercup", "Baby Now That I've Found You", lots of songs I don't know.
Fred Hersch and Bill Frisell, Songs We Know. Charming duo session.
Dave Douglas, Soul on Soul. Trumpeter's take on Mary Lou Williams.
Steve Khan, Got My Mental. Tunes by Coleman, Shorter, Jarrett, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Steve's dad.
Jess Klein, Wishes Well Disguised. Singer-songwriter.
Elliott Smith, XO. Depressive pop.
The Pasties, s/t. Lo-fi from Olympia, w/ Cyndi Lauper cover.
The Lounge Lizards, Big Heart: Live in Tokyo. "Fake jazz." John Lurie, Marc Ribot, etc.
Odessa Chen, One Room Palace. Angsty singer-songwriter.
k. d. lang, Shadowland. With classic country producer Owen Bradley (Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, et al.).
The Story, The Angel in the House. Boston folk duo, before they became Jonatha Brooke.

Apropos of nothing, I think I'm going to live in Uptown.
