Happy Columbus Day! Here are your presents.
The Jayhawks, Live from the Women's Club. "Official bootleg" of a 2002 show, when the band was down to a trio, plus two demos for the "Smile" album.
The Push Stars, Paint the Town. Catchy pop from Boston.
Daryl Hall and John Oates, She's Gone and Other Hits. Selections (mostly not hits) from their first three albums.
Mari Boine Persen, Gula Gula. Sami world pop.
Peter Gabriel, Up. Well, he's still Peter Gabriel.
Chappaquiddick Skyline, s/t. The Pernice Brothers by any other name; moody pop.
Fleetwood Mac, s/t. "Monday Morning", "Rhiannon", "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Landslide", ....
David Mead, Indiana. Tuneful singer-songwriter. Co-produced by David Henry.
The Alan Parsons Project, Stereotomy. Concept album about, um, modern life or something.
The Alan Parsons Project, Pyramid. Concept album about, you know, pyramids. Includes the Project's only funny song.
The Police, Zenyatta Mondatta. When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around.
Emmylou Harris, Spyboy. Live album with Buddy Miller, Brady Blade, and Daryl Johnson, following her Daniel Lanois record.
Imogen Heap, I, Megaphone. Emotive, Amos-esque piano pop.
Kierstin Gray, Anything&Everything: The Second Edition. Soulful singer-songwriter; sort of like if Stevie Wonder wrote folk songs.
John Carrillo, A Wink to His Career. Orange County power pop.
Dolly Parton, Halos & Horns. Bluegrassy 2002 album, with a great cover of "Stairway to Heaven".
Michael Penn, "Free Time". Single, with live versions of "By the Book" and "Rising Steam", and an alternate version of "Seen the Doctor".
Michael Penn, "Resigned". His third album of Beatlesque guitar pop.
George Harrison, All Things Must Pass. "My Sweet Lord", etc. Lots of bonus tracks.
Wayne Horvitz, This New Generation. Mid-80s New York downtown jazz. With Frisell, Previte, etc.
Wayne Horvitz and Zony Mash, Cold Spell. B3-based groove jazz.
Dave Holland Quintet, Points of View. Contemplative chamber jazz.
Bobby Previte's Weather Clear, Track Fast, Hue and Cry. New York drummer's octet, with Don Byron, Larry Goldings, and others.
Oscar Peterson Plays Porgy and Bess. With Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen.
Denny Zeitlin and Charlie Haden, Time Remembers One Time Once. Piano-bass duets. Pretty.
Charlie Haden, The Montreal Tapes. Live recording with Geri Allen and Paul Motian.
Danilo Perez, Motherland. Wide-ranging Latin jazz.
Lady Boswell, Music Is Love. One of the more eccentric performers I've seen. I could compare her to Gillian Welch or Victoria Williams but sometimes she reminds me of nothing more than a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in some old comic novel, demonstrating what she believes are the songs and dances of exotic lands. I'm sure this album is for someone.
