we're back

NW part of the tour is over. We've still got one show in LA near the end of the month. I won't be reading the LJ backlog from last week.

Best things about the tour: Worst thing about the tour was probably the, you know, tour. Oh well.

Last night we embarked on a two-week vegan experiment (did I mention the vegan pirate restaurant? in Portland?). Actually we'll be "beegans"--we talked it over and we just don't have any compunctions about eating honey. Or bees, I guess, except, gross. Anyway, if anyone has some vegan food tips or recommendations, toss them my way.

I forced Sheltering Sky and our friend Anton to hike over to Voodoo last year...and then I got there and said, "I don't actually want a doughnut, i just wanted to see the place." Unsurprisingly, my companions were slightly miffed. Did you get to Powell's?

Cookbooks: We like Vegan with a Vengeance and The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook, either of which I could loan you for a few days if you want to arrange a handoff at Barefoot. W could give you more on the actual making of things like mac n 'cheese' or soy yogurt, but he's off LJ...

I'm sure it was a nice walk, though. We did go to Powell's, but I am not as susceptible to it as many of my friends are, because I don't really own books. I did buy a couple.

If you feel like coming to Barefoot tomorrow night, I think Kate's working then (and I might be there too).

I'll stop by Barefoot a little after 8...W says I should also bring Vegan on a Shoestring and SOY NOT OI!, so I will :)

just kidding...I'll be at Barefoot a little after SEVEN, not 8. I forgot it's Tuesday!

Why veganism? It's stupid.

You are!

I had not heard about the pirate restaurant -- interesting! (Nor is it the first -- or second -- place I thought of.)

It's a lot tamer than you'd expect, at least at lunchtime.

I'm sure all the real pirates were still sleeping off the previous night's debaucery and whatnot.

You're going vegan(ish)? When did this happen? What about pizza? Or Chipotle?

I could probably recommend some cookbooks - would you use them?

[identity profile] jfb.livejournal.com 2007-06-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the pizza will have Not-zarella and the burrito will have, uh, no cheese.

Like I say, it's an experiment, and I'm not sure we're ready to invest in cookbooks. But I think Kate's goal is to eat less animal product generally after the experiment is over, so I'd like to hear about them.

http://www.theppk.com/ The Post Punk Kitchen. The proprietor of the website has a public access vegan cooking show in Brooklyn. She's got a bunch of recipes online. Oh, I guess Vegan with a Vengeance is by the same person. I fake-knew her through the WeightWatchers vegetarian board, but look, she's also on LJ: http://isachandra.livejournal.com/ . And on it she recommends some independently published vegan cookbooks, which probably aren't at your neighborhood library.

I've also heard a lot of recommendations for the Uncheese cookbook, which someone mentioned already, and also How It All Vegan.

Hi Erik, you don't know me, I'm Kate's stepmother. I'd recommend looking into some Dean Ornish books. He is a noted cardiologist and good cook. His recipes are tasty and easy to make. Most (if not all) of his recipes are vegan. You can pick up copies of his books (if you want to own them) from Amazon for a little over a dollar, used. Many recipes from Ethiopia are a good bet too. Good luck with the vegan tryout.
