Hey, remember when DeatHat was just about to go on tour and I was all panicky because my bass exploded at a show and I didn't have the replacement part? Well, that show actually went really well, despite the irreparably broken string, and one of the people who liked it was Chris Magyar, and that's why last week we ended up on the phone with him for our first-ever band interview. And scrambling to put together a band photo to send him by the end of that afternoon. I really like it, so here it is:

dreamhat

And here's the article in Good Times, Santa Cruz's homegrown free weekly. I'm proud of my contribution:

Saturday originally conceived of the project as a solo endeavor. “I wanted to do a one-woman band thing, with me playing the marimbas and drums, and using my feet and various parts of my body,” she says.

Bassist Erik Ostrom chimes in: “Playing accordion with your head.”

“Yes,” Saturday adds. “Unfortunately, I don’t have a very dexterous nose, so they were very boring accordion parts.”

The article is great publicity for our show tomorrow night at the Ugly Mug in Soquel, opening for Jherek Bischoff's band Ribbons. I never knew Jherek was a name people had outside of Michael Moorcock novels. Actually I'm still not entirely convinced.

But maybe I will be after tonight's show at Barefoot, which I guess I'd better run off to.

The hard part was running the fan hard enough to blow Kate's hair due sideways while she was hanging upside-down from the ceiling. That, and getting my makeup right.

Huh. I just assumed it was taken underwater.

I saw the DeatHat piece in the Good Times! All kinds of people I knew in that issue, my friend Heather wrote the cover story (actually, now that I think of it, kate has knows her, even).

Can't make the show though, even if it is in my backyard, almost. Catching the very last Shakespeare Santa Cruz show of the season tomorrow evening.

Hm, I guess that's okay. Shakespeare, DeatHat, it's a toss-up.

Speaking of band shots, Tin Cat was talking again about how we need an official band photo, and Tom and Dave asked me if you'd be willing to photograph us. They say (and I agree) that of all the pictures people have taken of our band, yours are the best.

Sure, sounds like fun -- did you have some background or idea in mind?

So far my best plan is just to find some public place with a backdrop that's pleasing to look at but not distracting--in my mind, it's the cliff at Seacliff, but that poses some problems--and take us there with a couple battery-powered amps and play for a little while, and bring someone with a camera and a good eye. I think we're more likely to get a good photo by being a band in action than by posing. But when we play for real, all the mikes and cords get in the way. If we can cut down on that stuff it might be pretty good.

We should probably do a posed one too, I just don't have any good ideas for it.

Kate and I are going to Patxi's around 6 and then to see All About Eve at the Stanford tonight. Barry too, I think. Want to come, for either or both parts?

It's true -- pretty much all the Tin Cat shots I've shot that I've liked were action shots. We'd probably want either early morning or evening. What sort of theme did you have in mind for the backdrop? Coastal? Blue sky? Foggy/cloudy? Forest? City/industrial? If we can get the distances right (the band's position, where I can shoot from, where the backdrop is) we could probably arrange so the background is a bit fuzzy (which can also be done in photoshop, I suppose). I ask a lot of questions but I suspect the right answer is pick some parameters that seem plausible and experiment a bit.

I'd be up for Paxti's tonight. I don't think I have a movie in me, though. Around 6, you say?

I think that's the right answer, yes. Maybe we can talk about it at dinner.

Should be around 6. Movie's at 7:30. We might call in our pizza order so we spend less time waiting for it at the restaurant.

Thanks! I was proud of how the upside-down aspect of the image echoed what Kate said in the interview about balance through contrast.
