Saw Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control, which was pretty good. I found the multiple narrators and flashback structure confusing, but it had some good music.

[livejournal.com profile] artname turned up to see Stephen Frears, preceded by Prick Up Your Ears, his 1987 film biography of playwright Joe Orton. The "conversation with" Frears was difficult; he's made some great films, but doesn't seem to have any strong opinions on what, if anything, he has to do with that. Also, there was feedback coming from the speakers through most of the event.

Skipped the late show of the Mindbenders shorts program. I've been running myself a little ragged and it seemed like sleep would be a laudable achievement. So now I'm off to get it.

I knew you'd like the music. I'm surprised at how many of the movies I've seen have voiceovers. It's generally been a sign of weakness for me, since movies should show, not tell. And some movies manage to make it interesting by making the narration twisty some how.

Alas, I missed Prick Up Your Ears, and just heard the interview. Frears main comment seemed to be: get a good script, cast the right actors, get the right people working for you, and your job is mostly done. An all too uncommon management style, but one that works well.
