web site hacking

Started a minor redesign of the web site (not visible yet).

I had two main goals: Reduce the amount of hunting around people have to do to find stuff, and integrate the external apps (calendar, journal) better. For the first goal, I've added a nav bar that hits the main topics. (Some of the minor stuff, like my rarely-updated 'music I like' page, will still be a little obscure.)

The problem (well, one problem) with the calendar app is that PHP iCalendar doesn't have a graceful way to link back to the rest of the site. So the calendar now lives inside a frameset--the top frame has the nav bar, so you can always hop to another section of the site.

I'm thinking about embedding my LiveJournal page inside a similar frameset, and creating a custom LJ style to make it match the site better. But if you navigate forward from the LJ--and why wouldn't you?--the nav bar frame starts to get annoying. So I'm not sure.

Anyway, if you're curious, you can see the redesign-in-progress. I want to add a mailing list and a more prominent LJ link, but aside from the "contact" link, it should all work. But it's basically the same as the current site, so it probably won't be that interesting.

That's one thing I've found frustrating in my brief attempts to include my livejournal on my own pages -- you very quickly get sucked back to livejournal.com, even if you don't go to anyone else's site. Bah!

i like it. i like the colors, i like the simplicity. it's clean, and good (non-irritating)design should be. i'd like to see the lj page with that frame up top, just for comparison.

Here (http://www.drowning.org/journal.shtml) is the quick version. If I were to go ahead with it, I'd probably change the LJ style.
