I bought a P.A. today. Not so high-powered, but it should suffice for coffeehouses, and it was cheap and small, as these things go.
I'm going out two nights in a row to the Bottom of the Hill, maybe my favorite SF club. This favored status may be solely due to convenience--it's just off the freeway, and there's been plenty of parking nearby every time I've gone. Or it may be because they book a great mix of interesting music, in a venue that's small enough for me to feel close to the musicians even when I'm standing in back.
Sunday: Tim Easton, whose opening set was the highlight of the Cowboy Junkies concert I went to; Firecracker, a local alt-country band I'm curious about; and Virgil Shaw, about whom I know nothing.
Monday: Carissa's Wierd, who did a beautiful, terrified opening set for... someone, maybe Giant Sand; and the Prom and Iron & Wine, both bands that cool people seem to like, and I like the MP3s.
One of the nice things about the Bottom of the Hill is, shows end late, so there's virtually no traffic on the way home. One of the terrible things about the Bottom of the Hill is, shows end late, so getting to work in the morning is difficult. This week should get off to a rough and great start.
