Sickening.

Well, I take back some of my earlier comments about this not being like Vietnam -- I think it still has a long way to go to reach that scale of horror, but it certainly seems to be approaching it in quality.

For the record, I've also retracted my brief optimism that, as long as they were going into war, they were going about it the best way -- a lot of the strikes do seem pretty surgical, according to people analyzing the available satellite photos (photos of the reported mistakes have not been released) but they seem to be relying too much on their own propaganda about this being a war of liberation and that all the people will welcome the US forces.

It increasingly seems strategically stupid to be spreading our forces out this thinly in unfamiliar hostile territory.

This is what war is about. Even with precision guided bombs. When you have to take defended ground, especially in close quarters it gets ugly, and nasty. What is in that article is actually not quite as brutal and disturbing as the stuff I have read about Stalingrad. But then the Iraqi forces are not that desperate yet and nobody is in danger from a Russian winter either.

Exactly. It's just war, and war is horrible.

After stumbling into this Jimmy Breslin essay on horror, I can hardly breathe. But I'm not the one who needs convincing. How can we penetrate the shields of the people who should see and feel this?
