As of last week, I had settled into a steady oscillation on the Microsoft decision, going from yes to no to yes again every day and a half. So I went up to visit. All I can say about that is, the rate of indecision has increased from 1.5 days to 1.5 hours.

I spent most of the last few days driving and walking around various neighborhoods in Seattle (and its suburbs, but only under realtor duress). Seattle's residential neighborhoods are great, and it has lots of nice commercial districts, plus the great dockside industrial areas.

The weather was uniformly mild and sometimes gorgeous. It did rain some, but as a bonus I saw a rainbow so huge and vivid it looked fake. I nearly drove off the freeway staring at it.

I saw more people crying in public than I usually do. The first one was just walking down the street during the first downpour I saw. It was a cinematic moment--trite, even.

In many respects Seattle reminds me of the Twin Cities, not least the Scandinavian influence, and the surprisingly high incidence of Minnesota license plates.

I went to an open mike at O'Shea's pub, which was fun. Someone kindly lent me a mandolin so I could play, and later I got to talk to people about being a musician in Seattle.

So anyway, it turns out I like Seattle, but I still have doubts about Microsoft, and about commuting from Seattle to Microsoft. Decision due on the 21st.
