jfbYou know how there some places where you go and just being there makes you happy?
One of those places for me has long been Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. Browsing the tables and the staff recommendations, being around all those books and people who like them, always cheers me up. Today after rehearsing with Scott I paid a short visit to Kepler's and bought Persepolis, an autobiographical graphic novel about growing up in Iran that's been on my list since I read this review. I do most of my book shopping at the library these days, but libraries don't buy a lot of comic books. The author is visiting Kepler's tomorrow night, presumably for a reading, although I'm not sure how that's going to work.
A more recent addition to my list is right across the street from Kepler's, a restaurant named Trellis. I stumbled into it on my way back from somewhere last year, was ushered up to the rooftop dining patio, and luckily happened to order the best polenta on the planet. The entrees are good too.
Today the man I take to be the owner told me "You have good taste--you've got a good polenta, you're reading, you're outdoors on a beautiful day." Completely shameless! But, you know, he was basically right--the best polenta on the planet, the latest William Gibson novel (fantastic so far), and a gorgeous California day under an unspeakably blue sky. What could be better?

Date: 2003-05-29 09:14 am (UTC)moby disc used to be a great little chain that employed really knowledgable and helpful staff, but then they were bought out by some lame internet music chain and they've since gone to shit.
i divide the bulk of my disposable income between this hole in the wall shop that's sorta near my home (they've got a really limited selection, but i still usually wind up finding something worth buying just from scouring their used bins) and aron's records in hollywood. personally, i think aron's is the best record store in LA. reasonable pricing, great selection and a helpful staff make it a real joy to shop there.
occasionally i'll even pop into a virgin megastore just to see what they've got on sale (and they usually price new UK acts pretty sharply).
