Today I bought a minidisc walkman. I have no desire to listen to minidiscs--I have an iPod. But I have an increasing desire to record the shows I play--especially the ones where I've got other musicians helping me out. I don't want to make a big production out of it, I just want to get some record of what I'm doing.

Tonight I plugged it into the sound board at an open mike, pressed record, and got on stage to play. Time elapsed: maybe six seconds. The recording turned out pretty nice. The recording level was too low (and there's no way to control it). The mix is too trebly (but I think it was too trebly for the room, too) and has too much voice and not enough guitar. But it's not bad for the amount of effort required (and the cost, although it wasn't cheap).

And some of those problems can be fixed, unlike my botching the last line of Kris Delmhorst's "Words Fail You", which is one reason I won't be posting that track. Unfortunately there's no digital output, but that's okay, I'm not Steely Dan. If I can get a decent WAV via the analog channel, and a decent MP3 out of that, my plan is to start recording everything I can--every gig, every open mike that'll let me. I should get some decent tracks that I can post on the site, possibly use for a booking demo, and at least hand to other musicians to learn the songs.

And, having taken a look at your interests list, I'll mention that one of the other songs I keep wanting to cover is Me'Shell Ndegeocello's "Bitter". I'm not sure I can pull off the vocal convincingly, but I love the repeating guitar riff.

It's been a while since I've worked it out--and what I had was just an approximation--but sure, I can dig it out and at least provide some hints.
