On the way home I tune into the power pop show on a college radio station, and the DJ is saying that he's reluctant to play this next record, because it'll feel like he raided his parents' record collection for some Gordon Lightfoot, but he'll play it anyway because Matthew Sweet is in the band, and power pop people like Matthew Sweet, and I'm thinking, hey, the Thorns, I've been meaning to check them out, three singer-songwriters, CSN harmonies, now I'll get to hear what they're like, and since it's the power pop show, he'll probably play a track where Matthew Sweet's influence is strong, a nice pop song, and he starts the track, and it's a nearly note-for-note cover of the Jayhawks song "Blue."

Which is a song I love, but, why?

Hey! "Mr. Power Pop" looks suspiciously familiar. It doesn't make any sense given where the station is based and where my suspect lives, but I swear I know that guy.

speaking of power-pop, i will forever remember the day when i was 16 and a guy at the record store i frequented *gave* me used copies of teenage fanclub's bandwagonesque and the posies' frosting on the beater and told me these records would change the way i thought about music.

and of course, they did.
