well, that was interesting

Yesterday I gave up on getting LiveJournal to ping weblogs.com automatically, and I manually pinged it myself. Today, possibly unrelated, Google seems finally to have started indexing my LiveJournal posts.

I woke up to find that someone had left two comments on a month-old post in which I quoted the New York Times waxing rhapsodic on the American landscape, and also a local supporter of Eric Rudolph who explained that "Rudolph's a Christian and I'm a Christian." My new anonymous correspondent had two points to make: Take the Times with a grain of salt, and "be careful when you bash a Christian."

Now, I don't think I was taking the Times with less salt than I take anything else, and I don't think I was bashing anyone, except maybe Eric Rudolph by pretty much assuming the charges against him are true. But, um, well, welcome me back to the web. Anything you say may be held against you.

Be careful when you bash weblogs.com.

Yeah. I was somewhat nonplussed by the response to my comment. I've got no beef with Christians except for (1) those that try to legislate their beliefs onto others and (2) situations like the time my ex's dad asked "when are you going to make a good Christian girl out of her [me]" and I thought of how all the "good Christians" at the church they attended totally ostracized his mom after her divorce (as if it were contagious--and just when she most needed support) and the horror stories my ex had about how the other kids there treated him and thought "you know, being a good Christian doesn't guarantee you're a good person and I really resent the fact that you're implying you're better than I am just because of the church you attend." Anyways, I guess that's neither here nor there.

well, I will quite happily bash the people supporting Eric Rudolph ("Christian" or otherwise) if they're supporting him for any reason other than they think he's innocent / being-railroaded and the FBI got the wrong guy.

Oh, well, her statement was, in effect, "I don't consider him a terrorist because he was doing it for good reasons." I don't think she thought he was innocent. I'd sure condemn that, but I may not know just what "bash" means.

well I meant "bash" in what I thought was the usual (at least for a written forum) sense of condemn/ridicule/vilify/lay-into/rip-a-new-one, which I'm assuming is the same sense your correspondent meant,

but maybe I don't know after all...
