The microwave manual expressly recommends testing dishes for microwave safety by microwaving them.

If the dishes themselves get hot (not the food inside) they're not really safe. Usually anything non-metal is safe.

Except those plastic to-go containers from restaurants. They have this odd habit of melting into weird shapes. Hypothetically, of course. There are also rumors of plastic off-gasing into the food and doing all sorts of unspeakable things. At any rate, put leftovers in regular dishes before microwaving.

Looks like the blue ceramic dishes I've had since Boston are not microwave-safe. Bummer.

That's kind of like "test product on an inconspicuous area before applying". You know, so only a little bit of the thing will be ruined.
