I liked Good Night, and Good Luck a lot, but I wish the role of Natalie had been reprised by Sabrina Lloyd.

In Mullen, ID, my only auto service option was a guy down at the Exxon station who changes oil and tires, and wouldn't be able to get to me until afternoon. So I drove on to Missoula, where they told me I'd bent a wheel and would have to replace it. Nobody in Missoula had a suitable wheel in stock, though, so they did what they could to unbend mine, moved it to the back so it wouldn't pull on the steering wheel, and sent me on my way (to the Super 8, because by then it was too late to bother resuming the drive).

Today my goal is Glendive, MT. Montana is one of only three states I've ever driven all day across and still been in. But with luck I can make it farther today, and get to Dickinson, ND, where the Super 8 has wi-fi.

Lost control on an icy patch of I-84 and hit the outside wall--not very hard. I am fine, my car looks fine (at least in the dark), but it vibrates disconcertingly when I reach freeway speeds. Tomorrow I'll take it to the one gas station in town and see if they can diagnose, then possibly drive it 120 miles to the Toyota dealer in Missoula. Meanwhile I'm stuck for the night at the Lookout Motel in Mullan, Idaho, with virtually no cell phone service (I get analog or no-bar digital, and even that is intermittent) and no room phone. There's a pay phone out in the parking lot. It's cold out in the parking lot.

And I have free wi-fi from a random Linksys router somewhere in the neighborhood.

La la la I am worried and lonely.

To whom it may concern:

Yes, I do enjoy Arrested Development. But if you don't know me well enough to spell my name right, you don't know me well enough to sign online petitions for me.

Ice cream. Airport. No sleep. New song? Lost. Shopgirl. Conclusions.

My favorite session so far was A&R people playing demo records long enough to assess them. It doesn't take long.

Last night I took a bus down to the Regent Showcase to see I Love Your Work, a film by Adam Goldberg and starring Giovanni Ribisi as a paranoid actor/celebrity losing his grip. Confusing but recommended. Goldberg and Ribisi were in attendance for a Q&A in which Goldberg noted that some aspects of the film were more comprehensible on a second viewing, but it had been hard to get people to see it again.

The notable feature of this trip to LA has been the constantly falling asleep--at the movies, in conference sessions, sitting down to read a book, I'll fall asleep anywhere. I started the week sleep-deprived but I caught up fast--something else is going on.

wifi, taxi

I'm still entertained by the wide availability of wireless access. Last night I went to a fancy restaurant and bar that shows movies (DVDs, it turns out)--and has free wifi. My hotel near LAX doesn't provide free net, but the hotel next door does, and I can pick it up from my room. The conference hotel doesn't have free net, but the shopping complex it's attached to does, plus, today, there's another conference at the hotel, and they've rigged up their own open wireless net.

The conference itself, well, I guess my head's in the wrong place for it. The main topics seem to be:
  • how to write a hit song, but the more I learn about hit songs, the less I want to write one
  • how to promote yourself as a musician, but, um, I seem to have lost all interest in myself as a musician
  • networking, but I'm feeling even more antisocial than usual
These aren't the people I want to talk to.

Tuesday: Driving, Big Sky Cafe, Dave Ray's band at El Cid, inappropriate falling asleep.

Wednesday: Weegee photos at the Getty, How the West Was Won in Cinerama at the Arclight.

Today (projected): Z Pizza, John Waters photos at the OCMA, maybe some songwriting.

And thinking, lots of thinking.

Oh yeah, and: Kate and I went to downtown Santa Cruz for Halloween with her friend Sasha, and played and sang on the sidewalks while passersby ignored us. This fulfills a longstanding goal of mine.

I expect I'll be reading LJ pretty lightly for a while.

Well, as of about 6:30 last night I'm homeless, with great thanks to [livejournal.com profile] artname for lending me his station wagon, and [livejournal.com profile] xythian for taking charge when I was too sleep-deprived and ragged to think or lift stuff.

The plan for now is to go down to LA and OC for a week, go to the TAXI Road Rally with [livejournal.com profile] devildali, see some movies, and hang out with Dave Ray and my relatives and anyone else who'll have me. Then back to the Bay Area for another week (I'm bad at leaving), sit in with Vermillion Lies when they open for Camper Van Beethoven, and head to Minneapolis by way of Seattle. Uh, I haven't arranged lodging past... Thursday, so if you have a couch I can sleep on, let me know.

tapes

Over the last year I've listened to a whole lot of my tapes from high school and college, and set aside some of them to remind me I'd like to get them on CD. I'm typing these in now mostly for my own records (since I don't want to move them to Minneapolis just so I can replace them), but who knows, maybe you're curious about what I listened to last century.

Or maybe not. )

Looking back, a lot of these are pure nostalgia picks. I remember Radio K.A.O.S. fondly, but I doubt I'd ever listen to it. On the other hand, I'd love to have the Wallets back in my life, and I'm not sure how I've gotten by without Naked City.

[livejournal.com profile] xythian photographed my going-away party last weekend. The whole set is really moving for me--there are a lot of people I care about in those pictures. But maybe you don't care about all of them, so here are a few of my favorite photos:
Ken also photographed Tin Cat's last show, coincidentally at the same place we played our first show, where Ken took the photographs we used for our web page. I especially like the last one, with me and Dave holding still around the edges while Tom and Evan and Meredith work up a storm in the middle.

Anyone want a bootleg tape of Steely Dan (live in 1973, plus Katy Lied outtakes) or Thomas Dolby (don't have details, it's out in the car)?

Tomorrow night (Friday) I play one last show with Tin Cat, at Jungle, where we played our first show. I'll also be playing mandolin and accordion (and toy piano, if they'll still let me) with Vermillion Lies at 8, then Tin Cat goes on at 9. Also performing: Human (7) and Cheddar (10). Don't know much about them.

Unexpectedly, it looks like after months of discarding books, I'm going to buy some new ones before I go. This is partly because I don't seem to have any reading material particularly well-suited for the trip, and partly because I think I have like $150 in store credit at Book Buyers, and I might as well redeem it.

Does the T still take tokens? Does anyone want, uh, five of them?

What about NYC subway tokens?

A set of Martin acoustic guitar strings (medium)? Some blank staff paper?

One of the CD display racks Oasis sent me?

Rugs, blankets, construction paper, blocks, marbles, games, tools, nails, screws, frames, office supplies, art supplies, clothes hangers, clothes hampers, looseleaf binders, report covers, chairs, desks, a 48-disc CD wallet, CD shelves, bookshelves, shelf lamps, floor lamps, table lamps, light bulbs, clocks, an end table, a coffee table, a futon, pots, pans, dishes, a busted melodica, blank videotapes, a DVD player?

Is my compulsive inability to throw things away ridiculous yet?

I guess I'm mostly looking for locals to take this stuff, except for the subway tokens. And mostly the smaller items--the furniture can go to Goodwill.

Shipped the last* batch of stuff to [livejournal.com profile] juliansinger, [livejournal.com profile] dusty_chenille, [livejournal.com profile] dougo, [livejournal.com profile] blackbriar, [livejournal.com profile] greyaenigma, [livejournal.com profile] bushmiller, and my sister. A few other people still have stuff pending. The mystery of [livejournal.com profile] bushmiller's missing comics was solved: I had, apparently in a moment of misguided foresight, stacked them next to the Infocom games he'd requested, so I could send all of them at once. In the closet that I never look in. So I completely forgot they were there until I got around to shipping the games.

My apartment is finally starting to look like a place that someone is moving out of.

Vermillion Lies put up some MP3s from last week's show at Moe's Alley. The fan favorite is definitely "Circus Fish" but I also like "Come Down" a whole lot.

On the whole, I think we'd have to call the going-away show a success. Almost a dozen of my favorite musicians played, although too briefly. I got to make a lot of noise myself. Even more of my favorite musicians and non-musicians showed up to hang out.

I'm lucky to know these people. I'm lucky to have my friends.

Addendum: The Pet Shop Boys medley of "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Can't Take My Eyes Off You", which I completely adore but have on another CD. Also includes "Bet She's Not Your Girlfriend" and a remix of "I Want a Dog".

Here are some CDs: Read more... )

Here are some books I've read recently, or decided not to: Read more... )

Here are some books I've kept for a long time: Read more... )

This is probably about it for the giveaways, at least for now. The books are pretty much gone, and I'm sure there are still plenty of CDs I don't need, but it's time to stop listening and deciding, and start packing and shipping.
